Our name
Ratnam means jewel. We hold our sheets to that standard.
In Sanskrit, ratnam is a precious stone. A jewel is judged by its finish, its strength and how long it keeps its shine, and we judge every laminate the same way.
From our base on Ashram Road, Ahmedabad, we supply dealers, contractors, architects and furniture makers with decorative laminates, door skins and compact panels, under our own Sunshine and Smart Shine brands. Our sheets carry the ISI mark under IS 2046.
How a laminate is made
Paper, resin and pressure
A high-pressure laminate starts as layers of paper. Heat and pressure fuse them into one hard sheet.
Decor paper
A printed or solid-colour paper sets the design. It is soaked in melamine resin for a hard, stain-resistant face.
Kraft core
Layers of kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin give the sheet its strength. More layers make a thicker sheet.
High-pressure press
The stack is pressed at over 1,000 psi and around 140 °C until the layers fuse into one solid sheet.
Trim and inspect
Edges are trimmed, the back is sanded so glue grips, and each sheet is checked for finish and flatness.

What does Ratnam Laminates make?
Ratnam Laminates Pvt. Ltd. makes and supplies high-pressure decorative laminates (HPL, also called sunmica), door skin laminates, compact laminates, metallic laminates and specialty laminates such as fire-retardant and chemical-resistant grades. It also stocks plywood.
Where is Ratnam Laminates located?
The showroom and office are at 171, Chinubhai Tower, Ashram Road, Opp. Handloom House, Ahmedabad, Gujarat 380009, near H.K. College of Commerce. It is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.
What sizes and thicknesses are available?
Decorative laminates come in the standard 1220 × 2440 mm (8 × 4 ft) sheet, mainly in 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm. Door skins come in door sizes such as 7 × 3 ft and 7 × 4 ft. Compact laminates are self-supporting panels from about 4 mm to 25 mm thick.
What is the difference between decorative HPL and compact laminate?
Decorative HPL is a thin sheet, usually 0.8 to 1.0 mm, that is glued onto plywood or MDF. Compact laminate is made the same way but with many more kraft layers, so it is thick and strong enough to stand on its own as a toilet partition, locker door or table top.
Are Ratnam laminates ISI certified?
Yes. Ratnam laminates carry the ISI mark under IS 2046, the Indian Standard for decorative laminated sheets (BIS licence CM/L-2887080). The company also holds ISO 9001:2008 quality management certification.
Who runs Ratnam Laminates?
Ratnam Laminates Pvt. Ltd. is run by its two directors, Saket Jagdishchandra Agarwal and Shailesh Jagdishchandra Agrawal, who have led the company since it was incorporated in Ahmedabad on 10 April 2006.
